“From Madam Hall’s Classroom to the Bishop’s Calling”
Today’s episode was a heartfelt and powerful journey with none other than Bishop Susan Haynes, a woman of deep faith, remarkable insight, and a legacy beautifully intertwined with my own family’s story.
Bishop Haynes joined us to reflect on her early years and the profound impact of my grandmother, Lilease Hall—known to her beloved students as Madam Hall. For over 70 years, Madam Hall shaped minds as a passionate French and English teacher. Bishop Haynes shared how she originally wanted to study German, but a fateful encounter with Madam Hall led her to take French instead—a subject she would go on to study for four years and later major in during college as part of a double major.
Her stories painted a vivid portrait of my grandmother’s grace, intellect, and lasting influence. Bishop Haynes also reminisced about a meaningful school trip to New Orleans, organized by Madam Hall. On that trip, my mother was a freshman at South Carolina State and served as a chaperone—a special memory that tied generations together.
Throughout the episode, Bishop Haynes also opened up about her spiritual journey—from working various jobs, to discovering her true calling in ministry, and ultimately becoming a bishop in Virginia. Her humility, wisdom, and gratitude reminded us how the seeds planted by educators like Madam Hall can blossom into incredible callings and lives of service.
