From Grievance to Gratitude

Ending my on-air participation in this podcast, I spent a short amount of time reflecting on some of the accomplishments we made. The bulk of this episode is to issue a challenge to those facing adversity, uncertainty, and a sense of helplessness. Through preparation, goal-setting, and steady progress we can overcome these challenges. "How do you eat and elephant? One bite at a time". Slow and steady wins the race!

Life isn't always fair. We don't always get out of it what we put into it. But we can't just roll onto our backs like a dog who lost the fight. As American Revolutionary Thomas Paine is credited as saying, you can "lead, follow, or get out of the way". So, when you are at a crossroads, it's important to choose your path wisely.

In this episode, I share just a sample of the challenges faced by my son, Kenny, and me. I also make suggestions based on the decisions we made that had successful outcomes. So, as my wife Celia always says, keep what you like, and leave the rest.

Dealing with adversity can prove quite challenging. Conditions aren't always perfect. We must learn how to adjust, adapt, deal with constant pressure. This is especially true for parenting. While we don't want our children to make the same mistakes we made, we want to encourage them to take chances. We want them to be able to overcome adversity to become the adults who make us proud! That's the gist of this episode.

We are coming to the end of my run as host of this podcast. I will begin a new one this Fall where the focus will shift from my grievances to my burning desire to facilitate the good works of others. The show is titled "More Much to Say", and we I can't wait to get started!

The first steps to manhood typically begin with a game of catch in the backyard. This is when the father gets to be teacher to the son, who is a captive and engaged audience. In this episode, Ken lays out the underpinnings of the relationship he currently has with his son, Kenny. Using baseball as a backdrop, Kenny as been able to take the life lessons learned to raise his daughter. This series will stretch over the course of several episodes.

In this episode, Ken introduces you to his not quite obsession, baseball. From being a form of personal expression to it's use as a parenting, the sport has been an integral part of the lives of Ken and his son. In this, and future episodes, Ken will bring you the highs and lows of America's Pastime in it's roles of friend, teacher, and lifelong companion.

Golf and stamp collecting are typical hobbies taken up by retirees. I'm looking for a cause to take up. Or maybe several causes. This episode is the first brainstorming session of the DMMG post-retirement committee. More to follow in future episodes.

Today marks the first day of my retirement! That doesn't mean that I'll stop working. I am cutting back on the number of "From Grievance to Gratitude" episodes I'll produce. That's because I'm moving from a self-centered focus to one where I put others first, which is the theme of this and future episodes. Retirement is not for the faint of heart. Especially for a diagnosed workaholic. In this episode of my podcast, I'll share with you the feelings I have about leaving the gig worker world to pursue the work that my higher power has for me.

Welcome to Season 2! When I signed off on 04/27/2020, I thought this podcast was permanently shuttered. I even began posting episodes from my new podcast, "Freelancer Survival Stories". However, I discovered that this show still had relevance.

Since my own survival story was still evolving, and I wanted to highlight the stories of others on my new show, it made sense to restart this show and use it as a vehicle to talk directly to you, my friends. It's great to be back!
