HEALS POD

From Ideas to Reality: How the SBDC Supports Local Entrepreneurs

Listen Later

In this episode of The HEALS Pod, I, Diego Trujillo, had the pleasure of speaking with two dedicated professionals from the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) in Southern Nevada, Jenny Zendajas and Carlos Mejia. Our conversation revolved around the incredible resources and support that the SBDC provides to aspiring and existing small business owners in our community.

We kicked off the episode by discussing my recent experience attending an event in North Las Vegas, where I witnessed firsthand the efforts of the small business department to empower entrepreneurs. I was impressed by the comprehensive tools and knowledge they offer, from licensing assistance to business advising, aimed at helping individuals successfully launch and grow their businesses.

Jenny shared her background in healthcare and her role as a business advisor focused on assisting healthcare businesses. With over ten years of experience in the field, she expressed her passion for providing support to entrepreneurs in the Valley. Carlos, who has been with the SBDC since 2018, discussed his journey from intern to lead advisor, highlighting the importance of market research and consulting in their work.

Throughout our conversation, we explored the various types of businesses that seek assistance from the SBDC, ranging from service-oriented ventures to brick-and-mortar establishments. Both Jenny and Carlos emphasized the importance of a solid business plan, which they help clients develop, ensuring that entrepreneurs have a clear roadmap for success.

We also touched on the surprising number of individuals who walk into their office unaware of the extensive resources available to them. This led to a discussion about outreach efforts, including social media presence and community canvassing, to raise awareness about the SBDC's services.

As we delved deeper, we examined the challenges that new business owners face, including the need for proper planning and understanding the market landscape. Carlos shared insights on how they guide clients through SWOT analyses and strategic planning, helping them identify their strengths and opportunities.

The episode concluded with a call to action for listeners to take advantage of the SBDC's free services. I encouraged anyone interested in starting or growing a business to visit their website, nevadasbdc.org, to register and connect with an advisor who can provide tailored support.
