Just because you can’t see the big picture doesn’t mean there isn’t one and more often than not, it’s bigger and better than anything we could think up on our own.
This weekend is Palm Sunday, the day Jesus rode into town on a donkey and set the prophetic hopes of his people fire. For centuries the people of Israel had hoped for a messiah who would come from the line of David and in Jesus, they see that hope becoming reality. However, it did not take long for it to become clear that the hopes of the people and the ambition of Jesus we’re not necessarily aligned. Jesus, the humble, donkey-riding messiah was also the table-turning money scattering messiah and that posed a problem for those who had capitalized off Israel’s exile and misfortune. For many, the kingdom Jesus was ushering in did not look like what they longed for – it was bigger and broader and far more inclusive than most folks were comfortable with. Jesus’ kingdom made space for anyone and everyone; no one is an outsider in Jesus’ kingdom.
