From Lab to Orbit: The Story Behind LeopardISS

Listen Later

In this episode of KP Labs – ON AIR, Helena Milevych is joined by Dawid Lazaj, System Engineer at KP Labs, to talk about LeopardISS — our on-board data processing experiment currently installed on the International Space Station as part of the IGNIS mission.

They explore what the Leopard Data Processing Unit is, how it supports in-orbit validation of AI algorithms, and why this kind of autonomy is crucial for future space missions. Dawid also shares insights into our collaboration with Poznań University of Technology, which developed a 3D mapping algorithm for planetary rovers — the first to be tested on LeopardISS.

The conversation dives into the challenges of preparing space hardware for a human-rated environment, including surprising safety constraints like cotton gloves, noise levels, and mechanical safety. You'll also hear how Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski will oversee the experiment aboard the ISS, as part of the broader IGNIS mission framework.
