Jane is sent to work in the Empire Laundry and builds a new life for herself with the neighbours who take her in. She finds solace there and the promise of a happy future when she falls for Joe, their eldest son.
But Alfie absconds from the workhouse and embarks on a life of crime. When their paths cross once more, Alfie turns on his sister. His plans will jeopardise every happiness she hoped for....

Good listen
Good story, narrators accents were very good. great listen. nothing else 5 say..... !! x
A lovely story
I really enjoyed listening to the story and the narrator was excellent - loved the Liverpool accent.
charming
from tears to happiness and all kinds in between. I loved this easy to listen to book.
Twaddle
Struggled to the end curious to see how this terrible book would resolve itself, wish I hadn't bothered. Awful
Better to read the paperback
Would you try another book written by Lyn Andrews or narrated by Janine Birkett?
Would prefer to read than listen. I don't dislike Liverpool or its residents, but listening to the narrator take on the voices of young/old male/female people nearly made my ears bleed. The screeching was just too much. At least with reading, you can imagine the sounds for yourself.
Who was your favorite character and why?
Ada. She seemed to look after everyone
What three words best describe Janine Birketts voice?
Feel it's unfair to answer the question. She was only doing her job
If this book were a film would you go see it?
Doubt one would be made but yes, although it would be predictable, it would be enjoyable too for people who like that genre.
