This book that critically examines Buddhism through the lens of pre-Nicene Christianity. It begins by honoring Buddhist discipline and its penetrating diagnosis of human suffering and craving, acknowledging that it offers a sophisticated analysis of the human condition. However, the author argues that while Buddhism identifies the "wound" of existence, it is insufficient as a final solution because it lacks the concepts of a Creator, sin, and bodily resurrection. The text describes the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path as a form of "spiritual surgery" that can dismantle the ego but ultimately leads to the evacuation of personhood rather than its redemption. By contrast, the author presents early Christianity not as a shallow comfort, but as a rigorous way of life that restores the person and creation through the victory of the Messiah. Ultimately, the work seeks to bring the reader to "ground zero," where Buddhist insights survive but their perceived sufficiency collapses in the face of the Christian promise of restoration.
