In Episode 72 of Downright Mindful, things did not go according to plan.
About 20 minutes into recording, the power went out — and with it, the video. The first portion of this episode is audio only, while the final 25 minutes returns to full audio and video after everything came back online. It turned into an unexpected throwback to how the show used to be — two guys talking, no frills, no polish, just conversation.
And what a conversation it was.
Paul led Matt through a wide range of topics:
New York Police Department strategies
The American West and cowboys (yes, somehow even Garth Brooks)
The importance of National Parks
Monopolies and corporate power
Each topic sparked personal stories, reflections, and cultural observations. Then Paul revealed the connecting thread that tied it all together:
Teddy Roosevelt.
From policing reforms to trust-busting monopolies to conservation and the creation of the National Park system, Theodore Roosevelt’s fingerprints are all over American history — and this episode slowly builds toward that realization.
It starts scattered. It ends cohesive.
And maybe that’s fitting.
