From Opioid Addict to Author | Brian Wood's Story of Addiction and Redemption
Born into a military family, Brian Wood describes his teenage Northern Utah life as “white picket fence"; that was, until disaster struck. Suffering from a ruptured disc in his back, the doctor prescribed an opioid painkiller that eventually sent his life into a spiral of deep addiction. In and out of drug court and jail, he found himself in the middle of a prescription drug fraud case of his own making that landed him in prison. Unfortunately, Brian’s story is more common than you might think. Listen as he describes his freefall into addiction, how he co-authored our book “All My Friends Are Felons” from prison, and how he overcame the challenges of healing and returning to civilian life.
“When I say waking up in a nightmare, I was just scratching on the wall and can’t believe, like, I’m going to prison and I should have finished drug court, I should have been well on my way, I had just gotten a good job, I just got a girl that I like. Everything was good, I thought ‘I hadn’t done drugs for a long time, and then now you’re going to prison.’ It all came crashing down and then once I accepted it and just said ‘OK, what do I do from here?’ It’s a lot better.” 53:19
