From Passover to Communion (Sunday, July 28th) *Verses in NKJV*

(Only 30 minutes! Alter call and Communion after sermon.)

- Some refer to the Bible as “basic instructions”, or as a collection of inspiring quotes, or as reference guide for living a Christian life. (Kind of, but not really.)

- The Bible is actually one continuous story, written by many authors over thousands of years. From Genesis to Revelation, it is all true, and it does not contradict itself.

- It is the story about God’s relationship with man, and ultimately, His plan for redemption.

- God makes several covenants with His people, serious binding agreements, sealed in blood.

- Today, we don’t understand the significance, because we don’t take our covenants seriously.

- Example: Marriage. We make vows, “To death do us part”… before many witnesses… but it only lasts until one of them changes their mind, or it becomes inconvenient, etc…

- Eccles. 5:5, Better not to vow than to vow and not pay.

- We don’t expect others to keep their word, so then we have an excuse for not keeping ours.

- When God makes a covenant with us, He will keep it!

- Today we are talking about communion. My hope is that you never look at it the same way again.

1. Passover: God saves His people from death by the blood of the lamb.

- 1500 years before Jesus, the Hebrews had been slaves in Egypt for over 400 years.

- Moses has now come to set God’s people free, and brought 9 plagues upon the land already, but Pharaoh will not let his people go. Then came the 10th and final plague.

- Exodus 11:4-6, Then Moses said, “Thus says the Lord: ‘About midnight I will go out into the midst of Egypt; 5 and all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne, even to the firstborn of the female servant who is behind the handmill, and all the firstborn of the animals. 6 Then there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as was not like it before, nor shall be like it again.

- God’s people had been protected from all the other plagues, with no action required, but this time God required them to participate in the process of their own salvation.

- Exodus 12:3-7, Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying: ‘On the tenth of this month every man shall take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his father, a lamb for a household. 4 And if the household is too small for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next to his house take it according to the number of the persons; according to each man’s need you shall make your count for the lamb. 5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year. You may take it from the sheep or from the goats. 6 Now you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month. Then the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight. 7 And they shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it.

- Israel’s actions did not save them. But by listening and obeying the word of the Lord, and taking action showing they believed it by faith, they were saved from death.

- Exodus 12:12-14, 12 ‘For I will pass through the land of Egypt on that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I will exe...
