I ask white America a hard question in the wake of Minnesota and Oregon and connect the dots from ICE culture to paramilitary “normalization,” to what it means for all of us now.

I open on a street-level exchange with an ICE agent—“have you not learned your lesson?”—and spell out the message: instill fear, force people home, and keep the ethnic-cleansing apparatus moving. From there, I trace the lineage from slave catchers and the KKK to today’s masked squads; bring in former senior Border Patrol agent Jenn Budd on institutional dehumanization; break down the Minnesota killing of Renee Nicole Goode and the misuse of “deadly force” justifications; and highlight warnings from historian Tim Snyder, public historian Tad Stoermer, and Jesse Ventura about what happens when paramilitaries become the norm. The question to white America: Are we getting it yet—and what are we going to do?
