From Slave to Millionaire

Listen Later

Sarah Breedlove, known later in life as Madam C.J. Walker, was born on December 23, 1867, on a cotton plantation near Delta, Louisiana. She was born to Owen and Minerva Breedlove, who were formerly enslaved African Americans. Sarah was born into a life of poverty and struggle, as her parents worked tirelessly in the fields under harsh conditions.

Growing up on the plantation, Sarah was denied access to education and basic opportunities for advancement. However, she possessed a natural curiosity and intelligence that set her apart from her peers. Sarah was eager to learn and yearned for a better life beyond the confines of the plantation.

Sarah's early experiences as a slave instilled in her a deep sense of injustice and a fierce desire for freedom and independence. She dreamed of one day escaping the bonds of slavery and achieving success on her own terms. Little did she know that her journey from a humble plantation upbringing to becoming a successful entrepreneur and philanthropist would inspire generations to come.
