Parkinson's Risk and Tainted Water
Scientists are rethinking Parkinson's as an environmental disease, not a mostly inherited one. A landmark comparison found Marines at TCE-contaminated Camp Lejeune were about 70 percent more likely to develop Parkinson's than those at clean-water Camp Pendleton. With only 10 to 15 percent of cases explained by genetics and U.S. rates roughly doubling over 30 years, attention is shifting to trichloroethylene in drinking water. The EPA moved to ban TCE in December 2024, then early 2025 brought talk of revisiting that decision. Parkinson's is not a punchline, the joke is on a regulatory system that cannot decide whether to pull the plug on a known solvent.
The Shard Adds One More Sparkle
London's The Shard will light up on Christmas Eve, giving last-minute shoppers one more beacon and selfie sticks fresh purpose. Because nothing says festive spirit like adding glitter to a skyline already dressed like a magpie.
Vojtux Aims for Real Linux Accessibility
Developer Vojtěch Polášek launched Vojtux, an accessible Fedora-based spin designed for visually impaired users and intended to make itself unnecessary by shaming mainstream distros to catch up. Orca starts automatically on the live desktop, the login screen, and after login. It ships with LIOS, Ocrdesktop, Tesseract, Audacity, and command-line staples like Git and Curl, plus thoughtful keyboard shortcuts. Instructions are on the project page. Translation: accessible means usable today, not tucked in next quarter's release notes.
Florida QB D.J. Lagway Heads for the Portal
Florida quarterback D.J. Lagway plans to enter the transfer portal after a 2025 season with 16 touchdowns and 14 interceptions. Destination unknown, carousel creaking back into motion as usual. Please keep your arms and eligibility inside the ride.
Wales Builds a Cleaner Hearth
A Welsh-engineered pellet stove aims to end the indoor pollution tax on cozy fires. Marc Howell's computer-controlled design for Island Pellet Stoves uses dry, low-ash pellets, preheats combustion air via a balanced flue, and feeds fuel with an Archimedes screw so you do not crack the door and inhale a soot bomb. A DEFRA report in February 2025 found these stoves produce around twenty times fewer particulates than modern log-burners. The look of a real fire without the lung donation, hand-built in Wales instead of a marketing deck.
America, Meet Your Mirror
Most Americans say we are good and decent. The mirror suggests our honesty is on a diet while our self-regard bulks up. A nation of As on the self-evaluation, remedial classes on the follow-through.
Salesforce's AI Agent Math
Salesforce is ready to sell AI agent licenses at a loss on flat, seat-based deals, confident that lock-in will pay dividends over decades. Take the hit today, monetize tomorrow, then keep monetizing until the subscription outlives the sun. Shareholders call it strategy, customers call it a contract term, everyone else calls it inevitable.
Heavy Drinking and Cancer Risk
New research reinforces that heavy alcohol use raises the risk of a wide range of cancers, and the danger climbs with each additional drink. The rooftop-sunset ads do not show that part. Your body does the math, and it charges interest.
