In this episode of From the Pasture with Hired Hand, we’re talking with sale host Jodie Obryan about the upcoming Top Hand Longhorn Sale, held August 15th–17th during the Central States Fair in Rapid City, South Dakota.

The weekend kicks off Friday, August 15th at 5:00 PM with a complimentary meal — a great chance for everyone to connect with consignors and show contestants. Saturday, August 16th begins with breakfast in the barn at 7:00 AM, followed by the 7th Annual Top Hand Longhorn Sale at 10:00 AM. On Sunday, August 17th, enjoy music and church fellowship at 8:00 AM, then stay for the Youth and Open World Qualifying Show at 10:00 AM.

This event is more than just a sale — it’s a celebration of community and youth involvement in the Longhorn industry. We're excited to share that 100% of funds raised for youth buyers will go directly to support them, with 60% applied as credit toward purchases in the sale. Lot #1 and additional items will be drawn and applied to buyer numbers, giving young breeders a chance to grow their herds with help from the community.

Today we have a special double episode of From the Pasture with Hired Hand. We talk with Travis Johnson from in the sunny panhandle of Florida where he started raising Texas Longhorns a few years ago at his ranch, LTJ Longhorns. In the first episode, Travis shares how some long grass turned into an introduction to Terry King, purchasing his first longhorns & traveling to over a dozen sales &/or futurities in the first year. From there, he has grown his herd to 50+ head. The advice that has been given to him the most and the advice he would give other new breeders is to be patient; patience is the key to growing a good herd you'll be proud of. 

Not only did Travis jump in feet first to the Longhorn breed, he also joined SETLA (Southeast Texas Longhorn Association), the area TLBAA affiliate. In the second part of today's episode, he shares how he became involved in SETLA and the importance & benefits of being an involved member in your area longhorn affiliate.

Travis is passionate about the herd, the SETLA organization and grateful for the mentoring he has received from Jimmy Jones, Terry King and many others. Fun fact, he's also passionate about little dessert cakes and nutter butters.

Welcome back to From the Pasture with Hired Hand! We’re excited to bring you today’s episode all about the upcoming GNTLA Great Northern Longhorn Classic and Cheesehead Futurity, held in Gresham, Wisconsin. Now in its 9th year, this event has grown from a small, local gathering into a highly anticipated weekend for Longhorn breeders across the country.

We’re joined by sale hosts Dan Huntington and Ali Mast, who share the story behind the event’s growth and what’s in store this year. The weekend kicks off on Friday, July 25th with the Cheesehead Futurity, followed by a classic Midwest Fish Fry that evening. Then on Saturday, July 26th, the fun continues with the Little Cheesers Haltered Show at 9am, Brunch and Awards at 10, and the Great Northern Longhorn Classic at noon.

And of course, it wouldn’t be Wisconsin without cheese curds! There will be plenty of varieties to sample all weekend long, ending with everyone’s favorite — deep fried cheese curds served on Saturday.
