“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control;
against such things there is no law” (Galatians 5:22-23).
▶️ Gentleness and Jesus
We must never forget that Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords. He is the ultimate judge (Matt 7, 25).
Two truths about Jesus and gentleness
🔹 Jesus is inviting and “safe”
(you can come to Him–but on His terms. He also has the best benefits)
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light (Matt 11:28-29).
🔹 Jesus didn’t compromise truth
Flipped tables (Matt 21:12-13)
Rebuked Pharisees (Matt 23)
▶️ Gentleness and fellow believers
🔹 We are commanded to operate in gentleness
…. walk in a manner worthy of the calling to which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. (Eph 4:1-3)
🔹 That includes “normal life” and also unique circumstances…
… if anyone is caught in any transgression, you who are spiritual should restore him in a spirit of gentleness. Keep watch on yourself, lest you too be tempted (Gal 6:1).
▶️ Gentleness and the unsaved world
🔹 Practice biblical avoidance
Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels (2 Tim 2:23).
🔹 Practice biblical gentleness
And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness…. (2 Tim 2:24-25).
but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defense to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect, having a good conscience, so that, when you are slandered, those who revile your good behavior in Christ may be put to shame (1 Pet 3:15-16).
Anger is a "great" motivator–but does not produce the righteousness of God. Love is the greatest and strongest motivator.
