این فصل باورهای دیرینه دربارهٔ منشأ انسان، بهشت و جهنم، ماهیت شرارت و نقش تمدنهای باستانی در شکلگیری ایمان را به چالش میکشد. از دیدگاهی والاتر توضیح داده میشود که آدم و حوا نخستین انسانها نبودند بلکه نمادی از آغاز آفرینش تلقی میشدند، جهنم جایگاه آتش و عذاب نیست بلکه قلمروی جدایی از خداست، و تاریخ حضور انسان در زمین بسیار فراتر از ده هزار سال گذشته است. در این فصل همچنین دربارهٔ لوسیفر بهعنوان انرژی وسوسهگر، معنای نمادین داستان طوفان نوح، و وجود واقعی سلیمان بهعنوان رهبری هدایتگر سخن گفته میشود. نقش فرهنگ یونانی در شکلگیری اندیشههای نخستین و نیز گسترش سریع اسلام پس از رحلت پیامبر، که ترکیبی از شور دینی و طمع انسانی بود، بررسی میگردد. در مرکز این مباحث، قدرت خلاق الهی، اختیار آزاد انسان، و آزمون همیشگی روحها در زمین مورد تأکید قرار میگیرد.
