There are moments when everything feels as though it might come apart. Not always dramatically. Sometimes just the quiet accumulation of things that are not resolved. Paul places one of the most extraordinary statements in the New Testament right into that feeling.

These are among the oldest words in the Bible. Older than most of the psalms. Older than the prophets. Three thousand years of use in worship, and still they land with the same weight.

The verse before this says we are saved by grace through faith, not by works. Then this verse adds the rest of the picture. Salvation is not by works. But it is for works. And the works were prepared before you arrived.

Jesus says this on the night before he dies. He is hours from the garden, from the arrest, from the cross. And what he gives his disciples in that moment is not comfort about circumstances. It is peace. His peace.

Lamentations is not a book you expect to find hope in. It is written from the rubble of everything that was. Which is exactly what makes what the writer says in verse 23 so extraordinary.

Most of what a life is made of is ordinary. The question that sits underneath all of it is whether any of it actually matters. Colossians 3:23 gives a direct and transforming answer.

There is a way of approaching God that never quite gets past the door. Cautious. Apologetic. Always unsure of the welcome. Paul has a single sentence for this posture.

Think about the last time someone said exactly the right thing to you. Most of us can remember at least one. And most of us can feel the difference between the person who said it and the dozens who did not.

Most of us have given something we did not really want to give. We know the difference from the inside. Paul names it directly and points toward something better than reluctant obligation.

There are seasons when the reserves quietly run out. Not dramatically. Just gradually. Isaiah's question to a depleted people is one worth bringing into this morning.
