Just saying...

I just finished this book and I'm having difficulty putting how it has affected me into words. The story itself is told through the eyes of Jackson, a mixed blood native who was given up by his mother at birth and tells his life journey that would eventually lead him to extremely gruesome killing fields. The story begins at a Sundance ran by a self-appointed medicine man who is jealous of Jackson's visions. It is during this fourth year to the Tree that Jackson finds the answer as to what happened to his mom so long ago, and at the same time he is accused of failing to complete his final Sundance. Through the telling of the story you learned of abuse, rejection by one's own people for reasons that may or may not be valid, of the tricks and games the true bloods play on whites, mixed and non-res pure who are seeking the truth, betrayal, the corruption of ceremony, and lies through jealousy. The author presents a thought provoking story which I know is laced with truth, as I am of mixed blood and know some of these self-appointed types and the trickery he speaks of. However, it will be the reader's own experience that determines whether Jackson will be considered a criminal or a hero by the end of the book, and can see the possibility of controversy occurring over the book's content. All in all, it proved to be a good read. I would definitely purchase another book written by this author.

Is this world hell?

I took Full Circle to be at it's core an effort to explore the question "has the world already ended and is this hell?" Spisak reveals a world many may know only from "Dances with Wolves" or Indian casinos for the twisted reality that it really is, and paints a grim outlook for how to address such a state of affairs. He writes with passion, candor, and honest perspective.

I give the book 4 stars because I know this author's best work has yet to be written.

Fair warning--this will thoroughly bum you out

I got this book because it was free and it happened to be the anniversary of Wounded Knee. I figured it was a good way to learn the history they never teach us in school--which it was--but it was also muddied by the fiction and hard to tell where one starts and the other takes over.

And man, it's more depressing than I figured--not just the history, but the novel. As bummed as I am about our government and history in general, any notion that at least somewhere out there, some secret repository of ancient wisdom was being safeguarded and would some day be used to undo generations of crap has been dispelled. Thanks to greed, dishonesty, propagandists, and revisionists, we're all broken.
