Tensions are rising within Organised Labour as leaders meet to plan a nationwide strike to pressure the government to address illegal mining, or "galamsey." Some factions, particularly the Technical University Teachers Association of Ghana (TUTAG), are dissatisfied over not being consulted about the strike. The opposition NDC has also highlighted the environmental damage caused by galamsey. Meanwhile, Martin Kwaku Ayisi, CEO of the Mineral Commission, is addressing the issue but resists calls to completely halt small-scale mining. Questions remain about how the government should respond and whether a meeting with the president could alter the unions' plans.
