Publisher's Summary:
Blythe gazed into his eyes. It seemed as if she were looking into his very soul. Could she read genuine repentance there... or just regret that he had brought shame to himself, disgraced his family? Suddenly, she knew. This was the real Malcolm - before the War, before Rose died, before his life became a wasteland. She saw the Malcolm who remained uncorrupted - gentle, intelligent, gallant before tragedy and loss took their bitter toll. Could she help reclaim that man - whole, healthy, with renewed vigor and pride in himself and his heritage? Hope stirred in Blythe's heart. Yes! Yes, with God's help, she could.
In 1870, Blythe Dorman, the high-spirited daughter of a prosperous Western rancher, falls hopelessly in love with a mysterious stranger , where instead of the happiness she anticipated, Blythe finds only disillusionment and loneliness. The unselfish commitment and undiscouragable love that Blythe expends in her gallant struggles to heal a star-crossed marriage frame the poignant plot of Gallant Bride.

Wished there could have been a happy ending...
This was my first Montclair book to read, and I remember my confusion reading it because of the family line. I had no idea what it meant to be a Montrose before I met Malcolm. After I met Malcolm in this book, I wasn't sure I wanted to meet any more.
My favorite thing about this book was the character of Blythe who is optimistic in spite of everything. Her courage is remarkable even though her story and first marriage are tragic.
This story really sets up the future of how Montclair will be divided. Garnet will definitely be in the future of the Montclair series as well as her brother Rod. This story foreshadows the story of Jeff's as well as we later see how arrogant and selfish he becomes as a result of inheriting his father's traits.
What A Sad Read!
In the tradition of its predecessor, Gallant Bride is a tear-jerker to be sure. Poor Malcolm loses Montclair in a card game and dies an alcoholic with his late wife Rose Montrose's name on his lips. He never unites with his son Jonathan, and Blythe is left abandoned, carrying his child. Her only hope is that in the next book she will unite with Rod Cameron--the man she carried a torch for in this book while she was still Malcom's bride!
Gallant Bride
This story is one filled with tragedy. I could hardly bare to stand reading a book filled with such heartache. Malcolm had gone from a courageous and intelligent young man in Yankee Bride/Rebel Bride to a sensless and withering gambler. My heart ached for young Blythe. I hoped that she would gain some common sense. Time warp.
Good reading, good romance
Jane Peart does a wonderful job in making the reader feel like he/she is there. Very good writing
