Game Dev: Collaborating with Sound and Music

Listen Later

This is the first in a four part series of longerform episodes. There were some stories we wanted to tell that didn't fit neatly into our usual format so we decided to bring them to you as a miniseries over the next few weeks. In this episode we speak with the team behind the indie game "Tunic".

Developer Andrew Shouldice, musicians Terrence Lee and Janice Kwan, and Kevin Regamy reveal how their collaborative process enhanced the game's mysterious world.

The team explains how establishing core "design pillars" guided their creative decisions, creating a cohesive experience where sound, music, and visuals seamlessly integrate. They share insights on developing innovative musical ciphers and sound systems that respond to gameplay, demonstrating how multiple creative perspectives strengthened the project.

The episode highlights how trust enabled team members to experiment freely while maintaining a unified aesthetic, and explores how they overcame technical challenges and creative disagreements during the seven-year development journey.
