The Philadelphia Eagles 2017 NFL season which culminated with a 41-33 victory over the Patriots in Super Bowl 52 is the stuff of legend. The team was on a historic run when their QB Carson Wentz went down with a knee injury that threatened to derail their season and title hopes, but backup QB Nick Foles stepped in and the rest is history. Director Kyle Thrash, a noted music video and commercial director, makes his feature film debut with a new documentary about that title run called Maybe Next Year. It tells the story of fans’ obsession with their favorite team with an intimate and nuanced view of the NFL’s most infamous fanbase, casting a humanizing and sympathetic light on just what it means to be a “fan” of anything.
Host John Rocha talks with Thrash about how he came onto the project, what a happy accident it was to start profiling this season before he knew it would end in a SB victory for the Eagles, what he learned about these fans and the lengths they went to to capture this story. Great stuff in here for any fledgling documentarian.
