With COVID-19 came work from home. With that came demanding environments and constant pressure on employees to perform. These factors have accelerated burnouts at an alarming rate.
On my podcast, Garry’s Shortlist, I explore the warning signs and management of burnout in the workplace with @ Michael D. Levitt.
Michael is the founder and Chief Burnout Officer at a burnout media and consulting firm, The Breakfast Leadership Network. He is also an in-person and Certified Virtual Speaker, bestselling author, a Certified NLP and CBT Therapist and hosts the Breakfast Leadership Show podcast (just to name a few!).

We all know that safety is a key operational part of any business. But would you say it also plays a key role in your company culture? So often, the blame falls upon subcontractors for workplace incidents. Rarely do organisations take a step back and ask, 'how did we fail?'.
On my podcast, Garry's Shortlist, I am joined by Tamara Jonson - Group Head of Safety at Australia's largest privately-owned construction firm, Richard Crookes Construction. The construction firm is embarking on a transformative shift surrounding perceptions of safety and high potential incidents in the workplace.
Tamara discusses how many organisations focus and report on injuries or incidents that result in direct harm. However, Richard Crookes is taking the effort to investigate workplace incidents and take them as seriously as if someone had been left permanently disabled or killed.
Join us as we discuss the leading construction firms' proactive safety strategies and top tips for someone looking for a career in safety. Tamara reminded me of a great quote 'hire the attitude, train the skills.' Spot on!
As my podcast guest answers, it's YOU, of course!
On my podcast Garry's Shortlist, I speak with Elinor Moshe, a bestselling author, entrepreneur, podcast host and founder of The Construction Coach. As Australia's first construction coach, I can confidently say that Elinor is one of the hardest working women I've come across in quite some time!
Elinor has continued to shake things up in the construction industry as she guides industry leaders and professionals toward increased recognition, faster career development and higher compensation. Her work, including the 'Constructing your Career' and ' Young Gun' books, talk about the mediocre standards that have filtered through into leadership practice and how YOU can employ self-leadership to have career success in the construction industry.
One lesson I learned was that employees and a company are mutually exclusive. A company's success will not accurately reflect the satisfaction of its employees

Do you suffer from a fear of public speaking?
If your answer is yes, you aren’t alone! In fact, approximately 25% of the population suffer from a fear of public speaking (Wuench, 2021).
On my podcast, Garry’s Shortlist, I had the pleasure of speaking with Sean Tyler Foley - author, international business advisor and speaker who helps clients transform into captivating, confident speakers.
In particular, we discuss his book ‘The Power to Speak Naked: How to Speak with Confidence, Communicate Effectively, and Win Your Audience.’ Don’t fear, you aren’t expected to become the next Tony Robbins! Rather, the book is designed to help individuals share their message with confidence, whether it be in a meeting with stakeholders, clients or your own team.
Here are Sean’s three key takeaways for a great presentation:
I would like to leave you with a reminder from Sean. As a presenter, aim to be AUTHENTIC and natural over perfect - an important point that applies beyond the business landscape.

Mates: Stronger together. That’s the simple, yet powerful message behind Mates in Construction.
They have been an organisation dedicated to suicide prevention and support since 2008, and today on the pod, I chat with their CEO Brad Parker.
We’ve still got a long way to go in our industry when it comes to mental health. However, it's providing places like this for people to go and seek help that are going to continue to make all the difference.
Jeremy Owens, CEO of Three Generations Improvement, has launched an exciting new venture that will have a HUGE impact on the construction industry globally.
US Construction Zone is a platform for connecting construction professionals (both in the US, and around the world!) so they can work together to find solutions and make big improvements in construction.
You may live and work on the opposite side of the globe to someone, but it’s likely you face the same struggles and hurdles in your industry every day.
I had Jeremy on the podcast this week to talk about all things construction - from labour shortages and safety, to what we think we can expect from 2022.
You can also check out US Construction Zone at https://usconstructionzone.com/ and sign up to be a founding member.

You might be familiar with the old adage, “If you want to get more down, slow down.”
Now I know we all have endless to-do lists and it can sometimes feel impossible to break away from the busyness and chaos of everyday life. But when we really think about it, do we truly get much of the impactful stuff done when our mind feels like it's running at a million miles an hour? Usually we just jump between all of our competing priorities and end up feeling as exhausted and stressed as ever.
If this feels like a situation you often find yourself in, I definitely recommend tuning into my chat today with Mindfulness Expert Brett Hill.
Brett gave me insight into the power we have in our lives to make our own choices and how we can experience freedom every single day. In just a couple of simple steps, you can move from a state of reaction to a state of conscious decision making. The impact this can make on your life overtime is pretty profound.
If you'd like to hear more from Brett, check out his podcast The Language of Mindfulness and keep an eye out for his book of the same name, dropping soon.
Facing adversities at one point or another is inevitable for human-beings. It's how you bounce-back, overcome challenges and move forward with positivity that allows you to truly live and become stronger.
Cystic fibrosis is one of the most common genetic conditions in Caucasions and can lead to digestive and respiratory health issues, and often, sadly, death. In today's podcast, hear from Nathan Charles, the CEO of Rugby Western Australia, 4 x Wallabies player and National Ambassador of Cystic fibrosis who shares his challenging yet inspiring journey through juggling this disease while playing professional Rugby for his country.
Nathan inspires many Australians today, including me, and proves that if you want something enough and are prepared to work towards a goal, you can achieve it! Have a listen, and be left feeling encouraged and uplifted from the energy Nathan brings!
