Hello, and welcome to another episode of The Good, The Bad, and The What!? The show in which we discuss three films that we have deemed "good," "bad," or "what!?" within a subgenre, theme, motif, director or actor's filmography, and more!
On this week's episode, to coincide with "Space Jam: A New Legacy" (it's here, whether we like it or not), Ryan and Chris dive into starring roles - or significant supporting roles - of NBA stars. We start with Spike Lee's "He Got Game," a unique film in the canon of sports films being both a love-letter to basketball but also extremely critical of the business politics of the sport. More importantly, matching Denzel Washington is Ray Allen, who sets the high bar for an athlete-turned-actor. On the other end of the spectrum is 1999's "Simon Sez," a vanity project for Dennis Rodman who, while one of the best rebounders to ever play the sport, couldn't save this dud. Finally, we move into 1984's "Conan the Destroyer," the oft-maligned sequel that sees Arnold Schwarzenegger square off against Wilt Chamberlain to fun, if not particularly good, results.
