The Good, The Bad, and The What!?

GBW #55: Piper's Pit (They Live / Sci-Fighters / Hell Comes to Frogtown)

Listen Later

Hello, and welcome to another episode of The Good, The Bad, and The What!? The show in which we discuss three films that we have deemed "good," "bad," or "what!?" within a subgenre, theme, motif, director or actor's filmography, and more!

This week, Chris and Ryan dive into the films of the late "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, arguably the first professional wrestler to successfully translate from the ring to the big screen. We start with 1988's "They Live" - John Carpenter's satirical horror-comedy that has cemented itself into the pop culture lexicon and is as sadly relevant today as it was in 1988 - that was #1 at the box office when it first came out and proved Piper to be a formidable leading man. Then, we move into the dour 1996 "Blade Runner"-lite DTV flick "Sci-Fighters," a film that cannot be recommended under any circumstance, but we praise Piper's performance as a Deckard-esque haunted detective, as he's playing against type and doing it well against a script that lets him down. Finally, we go back to 1988 for a slice of weirdness that plays up to Piper's persona from his days in the WWF, the inexplicably horny "Hell Comes to Frogtown."
