My favourite topic. I 've been waiting for this for a while. We all suffer from cognitive dissonance to a lesser or greater degree. The concept in simple terms, is that information that is hard for me to process - perhaps jarring, or worse, may require me to make uncomfortable changes in my life - will be assimilated (pun half-intended) into something more palatable.
My new phone, which turns out to be only the second latest model, will 'obviously be much better than its successor' which is full of faults. We want it to be so and we will it to be so. (Or we just get grumpy)
Even in the current situation, I feel that many people (perhaps myself included - isn't it annoying when a speaker says that!) manipulate the facts that the government gives, in order to fit it to their weltanschauung and personal preferences.
The highest stakes of all though are with regard to G-d. We tend to do this to Him. We rationalise that science has disproved His existence, because it makes things easier. 'I prefer my own subjective moral compass, as it requires less of me.'
The two symbols of faithfulness - Yosef and Moshe work in tandem to show us that far from deleting G-d from the picture, even a cursory glance will show His hand - however uncomfortable that may feel...
