GC#74 - Global Warming & World Acclaim - Perek Shira 5 - The Earth Song

Listen Later

There has been much talk in recent years about global warming. There is debate between scientists as to the extent to which we can and are actually affecting the climate on our planet.

I'd like to take a more down to Earth approach. (Yes, I did planet!) When a person is described as warming to someone, they are developing a positive attitude towards them. We are told in Sanhedrin how Hashem wanted to make the righteous Chizkiyahu into Moshiach, but because he didn't sing a song of praise after the Assyrians were miraculously decimated in the night without him lifting a finger, he could not be Moshiach. After all, the job of Moshiach is to acknowledge and herald a greater revelation of the Divine presence in the world.

(The truth is, the generation wasn't quite ready for Moshiach; this was the real catalyst for him not singing, and becoming Moshiach. Obviously much more explanation is required on that)

All of Creation held its breath. Who would offer to step into the breach and sing instead of Chizkiyahu? Of all of the physical creation, the Earth stood up. 'I will sing in his place'. It was down to Earth... who even quoted a verse from today's Perek Shira!

But only because Hashem said no, ('It is my secret [why I have decided that Chizkiyahu is not Moshiach]) the Earth was stopped. Why Earth in particular though?

Perhaps the secret lies in the partnership that humanity has with Earth. Things only began to grow after the rain. The rain only came after man was placed in the world. And his job? To pray, to praise, to sing out. The Earth - warming to man's interaction with it - global warming - acknowledges this and wants to repay man's effort to reveal real world acclaim...
