GC#76 - Sisyphean tasks - Perek Shira 7 - The Song of Gehinnom Part 1

Listen Later

Can you imagine standing in the holiest place on earth and speaking or acting inappropriately? I hope not. But even if you can, I would still hope that it only remains in the imagination.

Yet, just outside the Old City of Yerushalayim lies the Valley of Ben Hinnom - a place where child sacrifice took place. The worst of practices right by the holiest place!

This is the ultimate form of unrealised potential. One could have connected on the deepest level, but instead went the other way, sacrificing  one's own child - a child who himself represents unrealised potential.

Gehinnom is named after this place and it is no accident that there is a connection. Gehinnom is not a rap on the knuckles. It is not meant to be a Sisyphean task, contrived just to say that you have been a naughty boy or girl. It is there to point out what went wrong. And the 'fire of embarrassment' is when you see what you could have been.

Chazal describe souls after they have shed this mortal coil, as being covered by canopies. And 'each is burned by the canopy of his fellow'. Strange, no? Except, it is telling you that you could have done more. When one looks across and sees what others achieve, one is burning with shame - not jealousy - shame...

So of course, this element of Creation is necessary to allow us to see the full picture. When this happens, then yes, even Gehinnom sings out its own song, and even through the pain it is a song recognising that Hashem has put in corrective measures to allow anyone a pathway back.
