Raised by Monsters: How Gen X Grew Up with Horror

If you grew up in the 1980s, horror movies were everywhere.

Michael Myers came home. Jason Voorhees waited at summer camp. Freddy Krueger made sleep itself dangerous. And somehow, these monsters became some of the biggest pop-culture icons of the decade.

In this episode of the Gen X Archives Podcast, Pitfall Gary looks back at the horror boom that helped shape Generation X.

We trace the road from Universal monsters and Psycho through the darker horror of the 1970s, the explosion of slasher films, and the rise of Michael, Jason and Freddy. We also explore how VHS and video stores changed everything, why horror became part of sleepovers and Gen X social life, the golden age of practical effects, the parental backlash against violent movies, and the rise of the “Final Girl.”

Along the way: Halloween, Friday the 13th, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Poltergeist, The Thing, The Evil Dead, Fright Night, The Lost Boys, The Monster Squad, Child’s Play and more.

What was the first horror movie you saw that you probably weren’t supposed to watch?

🎃Trick or Terror: The Halloween Candy Scare of the 1980s🍬

🕹️The premiere episode is dedicated to Greg, a friend since childhood. He always embodied the true spirit of Gen X. He may be gone, but the legend lives on! 🤘

Halloween night, 1980s, the streets were full of ghosts, goblins, clowns and one unshakable fear: poisoned candy. If you were a kid in the '70s and ’80s you remember it, your parents inspecting every piece of candy bar and throwing out the homemade treats.

Did apples contain hidden razor blades? Was candy laced with poison? Was there really anything to fear?  Discover how Ronald "The Candyman" O'Bryan and the Tylenol Murders turned a fun night of trick or treating into a nationwide fear of candy.

Join us as we unwrap the truth behind the myths that terrified parents, filled headlines, and became one of America’s most enduring urban legends.
