COVID changed millions of lives.
Mine almost ended because of it.
In 2021, what started as flu-like symptoms turned into multiple hospital stays, dangerously low oxygen levels, pneumonia, and eventually the discovery of multiple blood clots in my lungs and both legs—including one pressing against the right side of my heart.
My wife was hospitalized with COVID at the same time. Because of hospital restrictions, we couldn't even be together. We had to FaceTime each other from separate hospital rooms while neither of us really knew what was going to happen.
I recovered.
Then, in June 2022, it happened again.
While celebrating our anniversary, I suddenly recognized that same feeling: I couldn't breathe normally. I told my wife to take me to the emergency room because I knew what was happening.
I was right.
More blood clots.
That second episode changed things permanently. Today, I take blood thinners twice a day and likely will for the rest of my life.
Recent discussion surrounding Dr. Anthony Fauci brought many of those memories back and made me realize that although I've talked about COVID before, I've never really told my own story.
This episode isn't about telling you what to believe about COVID, Fauci, vaccines, masks, mandates, or the government's response.
It's about something that can easily get lost when we debate those things:
Before COVID became a political argument, it happened to real people.
This is what happened to me.
In this episode:
- My first COVID diagnosis in 2021
- Being hospitalized alongside my wife but unable to see her
- My oxygen dropping to around 50%
- My second hospitalization and time in the ICU
- The doctor who discovered the blood clots that could have killed me
- Multiple clots in my lungs and both legs
- My second major blood-clot episode in 2022
- Why I'll likely take blood thinners for the rest of my life
- How I look back at the COVID years today
- Why people's personal stories shouldn't get lost in the political arguments
I Want to Hear Your Story
What was COVID like for you?
Were you sick or hospitalized? Did you lose someone? Were you a healthcare worker during the pandemic? Did you lose a job or a business? Did the pandemic change your family or your life in a way you're still dealing with today?
Or maybe you came through it relatively untouched.
Whatever your experience was, if you're comfortable sharing it, leave a comment or send me a message through Fan Mail.
You don't have to agree with someone else's conclusions to listen to their story.
Sometimes listening is enough.
