Explore how a self-directed IRA goes beyond traditional retirement accounts with uDirect IRA founder Kaaren Hall and host Dr. Julia Myers.
Individual Retirement Accounts are a common vehicle when building generational wealth. Less common is the using the power of a self-directed IRA. Unlock the secrets for alternative investing with uDirect IRA founder Kaaren Hall and host Dr. Julia Myers.
A self-directed IRA lets your retirement account act like your own bank. Kaaren Hall, founder of Udirect IRA Services, shows how a self-directed IRA lets you invest retirement savings in real estate, private loans, and precious metals. After the 2008 recession ended her mortgage career, she built the company from $1,600. Here she tells Julia Myers how to start small with micro-loans, which prohibited transactions to avoid, and how she gave her kids a head start with a Roth IRA.
Key Takeaways

Rachel Duck rebuilt after divorce and COVID hit at once, and shares how to talk to your kids about money along the way.
Talking to your kids about money matters most when life doesn’t go to plan. Financial strategist Rachel Duck learned it in March 2020, when her divorce papers and the COVID shutdown arrived together and her 40-year plan fell apart. She rebuilt, wrote A Single Mom’s Guide to Financial Freedom, and teaches a 7-step framework that starts with mindset, not math. In this episode, Rachel joins Julia Myers to talk about reframing scarcity scripts, defining your financial freedom number, and why she answers her kids with “how can you afford it?” instead of an allowance.
Key Takeaways:
About Rachel Duck:
Rachel Duck is the founder of JME Investment Group, a consultant, author, and speaker with more than two decades in real estate, investing, and financial strategy. Through her Financial Freedom Framework and her book A Single Mom’s Guide to Financial Freedom, she helps women take control of their finances and build lives of security, abundance, and legacy. Is “follow your passion” actually good advice? Author and speaker Gabrielle Bosché says it’s only half the story.
In this episode, host Dr. Julia Myers sits down with Gabrielle to unpack why purpose, not passion, is the better guide for your career, your money, and your family.
Find your purpose and stop chasing passion. Gabrielle Bosché shares a simple 3-question framework to find your purpose and help your family find theirs. Gabrielle’s path shaped how she thinks about purpose. She grew up filling tithing envelopes, lost her family’s home in the 2008 recession, and couldn’t afford college until an anonymous donor stepped in to help. This episode is for parents, grandparents, and mentors who want to help the next generation find direction, make wise financial decisions, and live with purpose.
Key Takeaways:
About Gabrielle Bosché:
Gabrielle Bosché published her first book at 17 and has since written seven books, delivered two TEDx Talks, and shared stages with Malcolm Gladwell, John Maxwell, Dave Ramsey, and Rudy Giuliani. She has spoken for Google, the CIA, Microsoft, Audi, Comcast, Expedia, and eight U.S. Naval Bases. She co-founded The Purpose Company with her husband, Brian, and created the Purpose Factor assessment. Money conversations with your kids matter more than your income. Emergency physician Dr. Bill Yount learned that the hard way. After decades of high earnings, single-digit savings rates, and silence about money at home, a lawsuit at age 50 forced a financial reset. Today he’s financially independent, semi-retired, and passing on wisdom and wealth. In this episode, Bill joins host Julia Myers to talk about breaking a family money story and rebuilding trust with teens and young adults.
Key Takeaways:
About Dr. Bill Yount:
Bill has worked in emergency medicine since 1992 and is a husband, father of twin sons, and dog dad to two labradoodles. At 50, he realized he was financially illiterate, burned out, and living paycheck to paycheck despite a high income. He paused, planned, and pivoted, reaching financial independence a decade later. He now co-hosts the podcast Catching Up to FI and mentors late starters who feel behind or alone. His mantra is “Let’s Catch Up to FI Together.”

Most parents want to talk to their kids about money, but don't know where to start. In this episode, host Julia Myers sits down with her 12-year-old son Mason to show what that conversation can look like.
Mason shares what "generational wisdom" means to him, why kids need to understand money before they inherit it, and how he thinks about deals. Then Julia gives him a virtual $50 and asks: What would he do with it, and why? His answer (invest some, give some away, spend some on Legos he won't get bored of) opens up a conversation about compounding, generosity, and making decisions on purpose.
The big idea is that it isn't about how a kid spends the money. It's about how they decide. Julia and Mason also talk about needs vs. wants, why price isn't the same as value, and how their family uses a Family Constitution to turn values into goals, including their biggest Operation Christmas Child donation yet.
If you're a parent wondering how to start, or a kid stuck in the back seat of the carpool line, this episode gives you the questions to start tonight.
KEY INSIGHTS
✔️ Money is a tool, not a measure of what matters. Teach kids that money shouldn't matter more than time and relationships.
✔️ Think before you act, and think before you spend. Slowing down before a purchase is a financial literacy skill kids can build early.
✔️ Price isn't value. A good deal depends on what you want, what it costs, and how long you'll use it.
✔️ The $50 question shows how your child thinks. Saving, giving, and spending reveal their values and decision-making, so there are no wrong answers.

Teaching kids about money doesn't have to be complicated. In this Generational Wisdom Kids Version episode, host Dr. Julia Myers sits down with her 10-year-old daughter, Lena, for an unscripted conversation about saving, spending, giving, and what money can't buy.
Lena explains her three accounts (spending, savings, and giving), how she'd give away $1,000, and how she'd split money between spending, saving, and giving. She also tackles debt and where money comes from. The episode closes with a true story from a Boston airport. Julia and Lena are stuck on a standby list, trying to get home early, and no amount of money can buy them a seat. The lesson: money isn't the end goal, and some of life's best things can't be purchased.
This episode is for parents who want to start money conversations with elementary and tween kids, and for kids who want to hear another kid explain it.
KEY INSIGHTS
✔️ You can buy anything, but you can't buy everything. Lena's tongue twister is a simple way to teach limits and the difference between a want and a wish.
✔️ Save, spend, give. Lena works out a 70% spend, 20% save, 10% give split out loud. Julia notes the numbers shift as kids grow and their needs change.
✔️ Kids can explain debt in their own words. Asking your child to define money terms shows what they actually understand, and where the gaps are.
✔️ Money can't buy everything. Julia's story shows that patience and trust matter when a seat, a result, or an opportunity isn't for sale.
✔️ Not knowing is okay. When Lena couldn't answer where money comes from, Julia modeled curiosity over perfection.

What's wrong with wanting to build generational wealth?
In Episode 2 of Generational Wisdom, Dr. Julia Myers tackles the question she hears most. She explains why money lands badly in unprepared hands, from lottery winners to student athletes with NIL deals, and why wisdom is the missing piece. She shares the six-part Generational Wisdom Playbook from her FinCon talk: influences, skills, values, privilege, discernment, and legacy. Then her kids Lena (10) and Mason (12) share, unscripted, why money is a tool and why they think every family should talk about it.
If you want your kids to inherit your wisdom, not just your wealth, start here. Your one step this week: pick a pillar and ask your kids one question about it.
