I was five years old and sleeping in my bed one night when our neighbour, “Mr. Malarchuk” called my Mom to ask if I would like to join minor hockey. My Mom, being a struggling single mom, could never have done it, but Mr. Malarchuk volunteered to help. For the next number of years, he took me to almost every practice and game, tying my skates and buying me Slurpee’s just like he did for his own son. I sometimes wonder why he would have done that? It was a huge commitment and sacrifice on his part.

Every time I think of Mr. Malarchuk, I’m inspired to be more generous with what I have. I know from personal experience just how much of a difference it can make. I believe that it can play a huge role in healing our world. Perhaps that’s why our spiritual ancestors spoke so often about it and held it up as one of the tell-tale signs of a healthy spiritual journey.

This raises an interesting question, though. Are your generosity levels growing or are they shrinking? Have you ever tried to measure that?
