Order and disorder was the paradigmatic worldview of the ancient Near East. In Genesis 1-11, the author is subverting other views of what brings order: relationships, family, government, alternative mythologies and theologies, and even personal attempts at bringing order. Instead, God is the source of order, and His covenant, which He introduces in Genesis 12, is the only reliable way to ultimate order.
