Unlike the covenant in chap. 15, which had no requirements, chap. 17 includes two demands: (1) to live uprightly before the Lord (v. 2) and (2) to practice circumcision faithfully (vv. 9–11). K. A. Read Genesis 17 1-2 - 14:08

  •  Abram is now 99 years old

    • The LORD appeared to him

  • The LORD proclaims his own name

    • God Almighty (El Shaddai) - The God of (who has/is)  Majesty(ic) and Power(ful)

    • Command - walk blameless before me (who is this to Abram or Everyone)

    • So that I can

      • Make a covenant between Me and you

      • May multiply you greatly

Read Genesis 17 3-8 - 26:48

  • Abram fell on his face

  • God spoke to Abram

    • My covenant is (present tense) with you

    • The previously made covenant

      • Father of a multitude of nations

      • Because of that you get a name change

      • For I have made you a father of the multitude of nations (past tense)

      • I will make you exceedingly fruitful

      • I will make you into nations

      • Kings shall come from you

    • Another Covenant

      • I Will establish my covenant between Me, you and your offspring

      • This is an everlasting covenant, this is forever

      • Covenant to be God to you and your offspring (personal)

      • I will give the land of your sojourning

      • This is an everlasting possession

      • I will be their God

Read Genesis 17 9-14 - 39:44

  • God spoke to Abraham again

  • You (Abraham) shall keep my covenant, you and your offspring

  • The covenant of circumcision

    • Every male in your household (note only to males)

    • This is the sign e covenant between me and you

    • Happens at eight days old

    • Throughout generations

    • Born or brought (your family or foreigner)

    • Covenant in your flesh

    • If you don’t do it you have broken my covenant

He received the sign of circumcision as a seal of the righteousness that he had by faith while he was still uncircumcised. The purpose was to make him the father of all who believe without being circumcised, so that righteousness would be counted to them as well, The Holy Bible: English Standard Version (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), Ro 4:11.

    • Said to himself - Born to a 100 year old

    • Said to himself - Birthed by a 90 year old

    • Says to the LORD - Can it be Ishmael

  • God’s response is:

    • Isaac

      • No, Sarah is going to be the mother

      • Name shall be Isaac

      • I will establish my everlasting covenant with him and his offspring

    • Ishmael

      • Ishmael has been blessed

      • Multiply him greatly

      • He will father 12 princes

      • Make him a great nation

  • Isaac will be born next year

    • God went up from Abraham

    • Abraham got busy

      • Starts with Ishmael

      • All those born in his house

      • All those brought with his money

    • Abraham was 99

    • Ishmael was 13
