Birth of Isaac
The LORD
visited Sarah - just as promised
Conception
Bore Abraham a son in his old age
Just as was spoken to him
Abraham
Called his name, Isaac (his son, born to him, Sarah bore him)
Circumcised his son at 8 days old (a Command of God, a sign of the covenant the LORD made with Abraham)
Abraham was 100 years old
Sarah Said
God has made laughter for me
Everyone who hears will laugh over me
I nurse children
I have borne Abraham a son

It’s Weaning Day!!!! - What’s the significance?
The Child grew
The child was weaned
Abraham made a great feast on the day
Someone’s not happy
But (as opposed to the happy feast)
My man was just laughing
This time a demand to Abraham
Cast out this slave woman, with her son
Worried about him being an heir with Isaac
Now Abraham’s not happy (this is still his son)
Read Genesis 21 12-14 - 26:21
The LORD speaks to Abraham (wonder if Abraham solicited the LORD)
Don’t be upset for the boy or the slave woman
Do what Sarah says
Isaac is the chosen son, your offspring will go through him
And I will make a nation of your son Ishmael
Because he is your offspring (Abraham’s offspring)
Abraham acts
Rose early in the morning (Abimelech?)
Gave bread and water to Hagar
Sent her with the child, away
She departed in the wilderness of Beersheba
Read Genesis 21 15-21 - 33:44
The water has run out
She put Ishmeal in on place (in the shade)
She went somewhere else to sit (a bowshot)
Do not want to see the death of my child
She wept
The LORD intervenes for Hagar again
Heard the voice of the boy (Ishmael in travail also)
No dialogue - questions asked but no answer
What troubles you Hagar
Commands given
Up!
Lift up the boy
Hold him fast with your hand
Promise retold (I will make him a great nation) - Told to Abraham and Hagar
The LORD provides
Opens her eyes to a well of water (in too much despair to see?)
She filled the skin
Gave the boy a drink
Ishamel lives on
Future narrative - God was with the boy (Joseph like?)
He lived in the wilderness
Became and expert with the bow
He lived in the wilderness or Paran (not in Paran)
Was married to a wife from Egypt

Treaty
Abimelech and Phicol (Command of Abimelech’s army)
Recognized that ‘God is with you in all that you do.’
Wants Abraham to swear - worried about Abraham?
Swear to me by God (your God)
You will be straight up with me, my descendants, my posterity (progeny)
Why - Cause, I was really nice to you
Abraham agreed

Abraham reproved (brought an argument to) Abimelech
About a well of water
Abimelech’s servants seized it
Abimelech did not know about this (going to give him the benefit of the doubt)
Abraham again takes the initiative to address the issue
Took sheep and oxen (did they just exchange animals) gave them to Abimelech
The two made a covenant (agreement)
Abraham’s not done
Set apart 7 ewe lambs
Gives them to Abimelech as a witness that he dug this well
Place called Beersheba - because there both of them swore an oath

Covenant made between Abimelech and Abraham
Abimilech and Phicol left to Philistine
Abraham planned a Taramisk tree
Abraham called upon the name of the LORD
The Everlasting God (Covenant made with the families and their posterity)
Abraham sojourned (an alien in the land) many days in the land
