Called his favorite son Esau (loved him for his food)
Here I Am - same words that Isaac said to Abraham on Gen 22
Told Esau what he wanted to do - Bless Him
Ready to appoint his successor
I am old (announcement)

Bring me a meal of the food that I love
Bless you before I die

Let;s Do This!
Jacob goes to get the Goats (went, took, brought)
Rebekah prepares the meal
Preparing for anything
Let’s take his clothes (best clothes in the house)
Let’s make Jacob hairy with goat fur (hands and neck)
The Puppet Master - abusing the knowledge she has
Read Genesis 27 18-25 - 1:11:09
Jacob brings the food
Isaac starts with the questions - Who are you?
Jacob’s 1st lie - I am Esau
Jacob’s 2nd lie - I did as you told me
Isaac’s second questions - How did you get it so quickly
Jacob’s 3rd lie - The LORD your God granted me success
Isaac’s first test - I want to feel you
The goat fur comes in handy
Isaac notes the voice but overlooks it
Isaac asks again who are you
Jacob lies again - I Am
Isaac eats and drinks
Proceeds to bless Jacob
Genesis 27 26-29 - 1:20:35
One last Test - The Smell Test
The smell of Esau leads into the blessing
The smell of a field (smelled like outside?)
The LORD has blessed
The formal blessing
Abundance - Dew of Heaven, fatness of the earth, plenty of grain and wine
Stature/Honor - Peoples serve you, mother’s sons bow down to you
National Implications - Blessings and Curses, you get what you give
Read Genesis 27 30-33 - 1:31:05
The Immediacy
Isaac was too late to catch Jacob and stop Jacob
Jacob had scarcely left the room (can you imagine them crossing paths and Jacob seeing Isaac with the food, knowing what he had done, sinister)
Esau did what was expected
He is Esau
He caught the game
He cooked the food
Isaac Visibly upset
All the lies
Whose food
Who was it
Who was blessed
“Yes and he shall be blessed”
A finality about it
Can’t change it
Read Genesis 27 34-40 - 1:37:35
Esau’s reaction to the news of the blessing
Exceedingly great and bitter cry
Bless me, even me also - the same level of blessing as Jacob?
Jacob can’t - He blessed the brother already
Does not use Jacob’s name
Nothing else to give - blessed with all the land and all the honor
Esau blames Jacob - twice
Jacob’s name fits him
Tricked him twice (birthright and blessing)
The Blessing covers all that he could positively bless his son with
We get the meaning of the blessing
Blessed with all that, what else is there
Esau asks for any blessing
Jacob manufactures an anti-blessing
Away from the fatness of the earth shall your dwelling be
Away from the dew of heaven on high
You will have to fight for all you will have
You shall serve your brother
(the positive?) when you grow restless you shall break his yoke from your neck
Read Genesis 27 40-46 - 1:48:20
Esau’s anger is kindled
Mom to the rescue - she has the knowledge and hears everything
Smoothes it over with Isaac
