Genesis 27 26-29 - 1:20:35

  • One last Test - The Smell Test

  • The smell of Esau leads into the blessing

    • The smell of a field (smelled like outside?)

    • The LORD has blessed

  • The formal blessing

    • Abundance - Dew of Heaven, fatness of the earth, plenty of grain and wine

    • Stature/Honor - Peoples serve you, mother’s sons bow down to you

    • National Implications - Blessings and Curses, you get what you give

Read Genesis 27 30-33 - 1:31:05

  • The Immediacy

    • Who was blessed

  • “Yes and he shall be blessed”

    • A finality about it

    • Can’t change it

  • Esau’s reaction to the news of the blessing

    • Exceedingly great and bitter cry

    • Bless me, even me also - the same level of blessing as Jacob?

  • Jacob can’t - He blessed the brother already

    • Does not use Jacob’s name

    • Nothing else to give - blessed with all the land and all the honor

  • Esau blames Jacob - twice

    • Jacob’s name fits him

    • Tricked him twice (birthright and blessing)

  • The Blessing covers all that he could positively bless his son with

    • We get the meaning of the blessing

    • Blessed with all that, what else is there

  • Esau asks for any blessing

  • Jacob manufactures an anti-blessing

    • Away from the fatness of the earth shall your dwelling be

    • Away from the dew of heaven on high

    • You will have to fight for all you will have

    • You shall serve your brother

    • (the positive?) when you grow restless you shall break his yoke from your neck

  • Esau’s anger is kindled

  • Mom to the rescue - she has the knowledge and hears everything
