Jacob’s Journey - The land of the people of the East (East again)
A well is seen - flocks watered out of this well
Three flocks of sheep already there
Large stone on the mouth of the well
When all the flocks arrived
Shepherds (plural) would roll away the stone
Water the sheep
Put the stone back when done
Read Genesis 29 4-8 - 11:56
Jacob starts a conversation
Where you from? - Haran
Do you know Laban? - Yes
How is he doing? - Well
Rachel mentioned - She is coming with the sheep
Is Jacob mansplaining?
Tells them what they should be doing with the sheep
We learn that Jacob has some agricultural skills
Read Genesis 2 9-14 - 23:05
Rachel steps on the scene - Walkout music?
While still speaking with them (suddenness)
Told she was with her father’s sheep
She was a shepherdess
Jacob greets Rachel - weird?
Kisses her
Weeps
Tells her who he is (guess it makes sense after this)
Rachel’s response similar to Rebekah’s response
Rant to Tell Laban
Laban’s response is similar to his meeting of Abraham’s servant.
Ran to meet him
Invited him in
Make a declaration - Surely you are a relative (Adam?) - identify Theft y’all?
Stayed with him a month
Read Genesis 29 15-20 - 32:57
A month has passed and Laban asks about wages - making it sound like he is not trying to take advantage of him
Laban has two daughters we are introduced to them
Contrast of the daughters just like the sons
Leah described as having weak eyes
Rachel described as beautiful in form and appearance
Jacob loves Rachel, there is that word again, and will work 7 years for her
Laban says this is better than anyone else in this area
Stay with me
Jacob served 7 years
They seemed like a few days, because he had love for her (this is different)
Read Genesis 29 21-25 - 50:12
Then - Seven years has passed
Give me my wife
We should be married
I worked as we agreed on
Laban puts together the marriage ceremony
All the people of the place
Made a feast
But - Something is going on here that is not of the expectation
Laban brought Leah to Jacob (not Rachel as agreed upon)
Laban gave Zilpah to Leah for a servant
Jacob does not know until the next morning
What is this you have done to me?
Did I not serve you Rachel?
Whey then have you deceived me?
Jacob got a taste of what he delivered to Esau (Hairy)
Read Genesis 29 26-30 - 55:20
Laban is like - ‘It’s not me it’s you.
This is how we do things, do not know how you all do things
Laban uses the ‘Firstborn’ word
Laban gives an alternative
Complete another week (7 years)
You can then marry Rachel
Jacob completed another 7 years
Another marriage festival(?)
Laban gave his daughter Rachel to Jacob
Jacob gave his female servant to Rachel - Bilhah
Jacob went into Rachel
He loved Rachel more than Leah
Repeats the 7 years (Rachel given on the promise or after the completion)
Read Genesis 29 31-35 - 59:48
The LORD ‘saw’ that Leah was hated - Actually treated her badly or that He just knows or both
This causes the LORD to move
He opened Leah’s womb
He did not open Rachel’s womb
Leah conceived and bore …
Son 1 Reuben - The LORD has looked upon my affliction
Now my husband will love me
Son 2 Simeon - The LORD has heard that I am hated
Son 3 Levi - This time my husband will be attached to me - 3 sons
Son 4 Judah - This time I will praise the LORD
Then she ceased bearing
