The Scouting Report
Jacob sends messengers ahead to Esau in the land of Seir.
The Message: Humble and submissive ("Your servant Jacob").
Explains all that he has (willing to share? Compensate Easu for stealing his birthright and blessing)
The Report: The messengers return with terrifying news—Esau is coming to meet Jacob with 400 men.
More man than Abraham had to get lot back
Jacob’s Panic
Jacob is "greatly afraid and distressed."
He divides his people and flocks into two camps. If Esau attacks one, the other can escape.
Read Genesis 32:9-12 - 26:12
Jacob’s Prayer
He addresses the God of his fathers, Abraham and Isaac.
"I am not worthy of the least of all the mercies."
"Deliver me, I pray, from the hand of my brother."
He throws God’s own words back to Him: "You said, 'I will surely treat you well...'".
Read Genesis 32:13-21 - 30:06
The "I'm Sorry" Gift
Jacob prepares a massive bribe (appeasement gift) for Esau:
200 female goats, 20 male goats.
200 ewes, 20 rams.
30 milking camels with their colts.
40 cows, 10 bulls.
20 female donkeys, 10 male donkeys.
He sends them in separate droves, telling each servant to say, "They belong to your servant Jacob; it is a present sent to my lord Esau."
6 sets of gifts coming at a staggered pace.
Sends everything ahead of him and stays the night at the camp
Read Genesis 32:22-26 - 36:32
The Midnight Match
Jacob sends his wives, servants, and eleven sons across the ford of Jabbok.
Jacob is left alone.
The Wrestling Match: A "Man" wrestles with him until daybreak.
We think Jacob is strong from him rolling the stone off the well
The Man touches Jacob’s hip socket, putting it out of joint.
Jacob’s tenacity: "I will not let You go unless You bless me!"
Read Genesis 32:27-32 - 44:49
The Name Change
The Man asks his name: "Jacob" (Heel-catcher/Supplanter).
The New Name: Israel ("For you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed").
God Prevails
Jacob asks the Man's name, but the Man responds with a question and blesses him there.
The Aftermath
Jacob names the place Peniel ("For I have seen God face to face, and my life is preserved").
Facing God or Face of God
Note: Jacob limps because of his hip—this is why the people of Israel do not eat the sinew of the hip to this day.
