Read Genesis 34 5-7 - 26:25

• Jacob knows- actions defiled Dinah

• Sons (probably Dinah’s brothers) were in the field

• Jacob held his peace until they came in from the field

• Hamor visits Jacob (King goes to see jacob)

• Brothers come back - we see how bad this is

• They were very angry and indignant

• What was done was an outrageous thing

• Such a thing must not be done

• We get insight into the discussion between Hamor and Jacob and his sons (not sure which ones)

• Hamor’s soul longs for your daughter

• Asks (Please) give her to him as a wife

• Expands to beyond just Shechem and Dinah

• Make marriages with us

• Give your daughters to us

• The land shall be open to you (the irony)

• Make this your home (the irony)

• Shechem continues to make a case

• Let me find favor in your eyes

• I will give whatever you ask

Read Genesis 34 13-17 - 42:01

• The sons of Jacob answer - not Jacob (shades of Laban with Rebekah)

• Answered deceitfully (because of Dinah being defiled)

• Call out circumcision

• You all do this and that makes you fit to merge our families (a disgrace)

• This has not been forgotten

• Still important, even if being presented in deceit

• If you do it …

• We will agree with you

• We will give you our daughters

• We will marry your daughters

• We will dwell in your land

• We will become one people

• Hamor and Shechem - So you are saying there a chance

• They moved quickly (especially the young man) 

• Because he delighted in Jacob’s daughter

• We get more information on Shechme - best of what his father has to offer

• They (Hamor and Shechem) spoke at the gate

• Told them what was discussed

• Made a case of combining the groups

• Let everyone know the condition (Circumcision of the men)

• Then things get selfish

• Their livestock, their property and their beasts be ours

• They listened and did as they said (every make was circumcised)
