Genesis 39: Firm principles and values so as not to fall into temptation.
Genesis 39:6-23:
Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance. And it came to pass after these things that his master’s wife cast longing eyes on Joseph, and she said, “Lie with me.”
But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Look, my master does not know what is with me in the house, and he has committed all that he has to my hand. There is no one greater in this house than I, nor has he kept back anything from me but you, because you are his wife. How then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?”
So it was, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not heed her, to lie with her or to be with her. But it happened about this time, when Joseph went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the house was inside, that she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me.” But he left his garment in her hand, and fled and ran outside. And so it was, when she saw that he had left his garment in her hand and fled outside, that she called to the men of her house and spoke to them, saying, “See, he has brought in to us a Hebrew to mock us. He came in to me to lie with me, and I cried out with a loud voice. And it happened, when he heard that I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me, and fled and went outside.”
So she kept his garment with her until his master came home. Then she spoke to him with words like these, saying, “The Hebrew servant whom you brought to us came in to me to mock me; so it happened, as I lifted my voice and cried out, that he left his garment with me and fled outside.”
So it was, when his master heard the words which his wife spoke to him, saying, “Your servant did to me after this manner,” that his anger was aroused. Then Joseph’s master took him and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were confined. And he was there in the prison. But the Lord was with Joseph and showed him mercy, and He gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison. And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners who were in the prison; whatever they did there, it was his doing. The keeper of the prison did not look into anything that was under Joseph’s authority, because the Lord was with him; and whatever he did, the Lord made it prosper.
The life of Joseph is an exemplary life to imitate. After suffering the consequences of the hatred and envy of his brothers, his father's favorite boy who wore a special cloak, now had slave clothes and worked in a far away place, without any contact with his father and his family. However, God had a specific plan with Joseph and blessed him wherever he went.
He began to prosper in his workplace because he did it with honesty and integrity. At an early age, Joseph already showed that he had a firm character, with defined principles and values, with great moral ethics. He was a truthful young man wherever he was.
The test of his character came when his boss's wife was constantly seducing him. He avoided these advances until one day she planned to be with him alone and brazenly ambushed him to force him into extramarital affairs. Young Joseph had very clear and firm life parameters. He gave her two compelling reasons why he could not agree to her claims: One, his boss made it clear that Joseph had access to every object or person in his house, except his wife. He told her that her husband was clear that he couldn't even touch her. Two, Joseph loved and feared the God of his fathers, the same One who gave him visions in dreams of his future, the same One who chose his father and his family to bring the blessing of Abraham to the nations, as long as they remained faithful and separated from all evil practice. Joseph knew that sexual immorality such as fornication and adultery were clear actions that harm the lives of others and offend God, and Joseph knew that no one can hide from the presence and judgments of God.
So, Joseph did not fall into that trap, into that temptation. He could easily have made thousands of excuses to have a moment of pleasure and do bad and forbidden things, but he chose to maintain his firm conviction, his principles and values, and did not let his dignity be trampled on, although it cost him to go to jail unfairly.
God is so great that He used this injustice to magnify Joseph, to bless him and prosper him, and to use this event in God's divine plan to mold and prepare him to take him to the place where God was going to use him mightily.
I hope that we will be inspired to live lives of integrity and strong character in our spiritual lives. This lesson can apply to all members of our household: adults and youth, single and married, men and women. Let's make a difference in this unbridled world. Show a good example of a true child of God.
Let's scrutinize: Paraphrase verse 8. Ponder Joseph's response to the woman.
