  • Connects this genealogy to the creation narrative

    • Created in God’s likeness

    • Created them male and female

    • He blessed them

    • He named them (authority and ultimate Father)

  • The intent still continues, even though not as originally designed

  • Genealogy Formula

    • Person lived a number of years

    • Person father and Person

    • Person lived another number of years

    • Person has other sons and daughters

    • Person died

  • Replay of the end of Ch 4 (Framed by Cain’s Line)

  • Adam’s own likeness and own image (passing down)

  • See the Blessing

  • See the hope (points back to Gen 3:15?)

  • There are others out there (1 baby mama as far as we can see)

  • See the Consequence of sin (‘,and he died’)

Read Genesis 5 6-14 - 18:12

  • Formula followed until Enoch

  • Additional information on Enoch (Walked with God)

    • To walk with God is to have communion or intimacy with God

    • Walk in New Testament generally means conduct that springs from a intimacy with God

  • There is an outcome for Enoch walking with God

    • Missing the refrain that every other person has (‘,and he died’)

    • Somehow the punishment of being returned to ground missed Enoch

    • No information given as to what happened exactly

    • He was and he was not

    • Lifespan of ONLY 365 years, is not a punishment for sin (his walk reiterated)

Read Genesis 5 15-24 - 20:35

  • Methuselah the longest living called out (969 years)

  • Lamech (not the same one) fathers a son with a hope (look at the song and the prayer)

    • Indicates the continued impacts of the curse on the ground from the fall

    • Indicates the hardship that is felt due to the curse

    • Seeking relief form the pain and toil that work now requires

    • Anticipating and hoping that his son offers relief from that painful toil (Gen 3:15?)

Read Genesis 5 25-32 - 23:35

  • The formula is not fully applied to Noah

    • Some indication that we are expecting to more of Noah

    • Not just one son mentioned, but all have been mentioned

  • All this takes us from Adam and Seth to the next major player in the Story of God and man
