Genesis 1 opens the Bible with a foundation that steadies the soul, God is first, God is Creator, God is in control. Before anything had shape or meaning, the world was formless, empty, and covered in darkness, yet the Spirit of God hovered over the chaos, ready to work. Then God spoke, and light broke in, order began, and life followed. Across six days God forms what is chaotic and fills what is empty, separating light from darkness, sky from sea, land from waters, then filling those spaces with sun and moon, fish and birds, animals and finally mankind. Humanity is the climax of creation, made in God’s image, given dignity, purpose, and stewardship, and God declares His work not just good but very good. The sermon calls us to begin the new year with God at the center, trusting that the One who speaks light into darkness can bring order to our scattered places, fill our empty places, and shape our lives for His glory.
