Genesis Chapter 21 Explained

Listen Later

Genesis 21 Bible Recap — God’s Promise Arrives Genesis chapter 21 is a powerful reminder that God keeps His word, even when it feels like it’s taking forever. This chapter is simple, emotional, and full of encouragement for anyone who has been waiting on God to move in their life. ⭐ Isaac Is Born — The Promise Finally Happens The chapter begins with something huge:

Sarah (SAIR-ruh), Abraham’s wife, finally becomes pregnant just like God promised. She gives birth to a baby boy named Isaac (EYE-zik). Abraham (AY-bruh-ham) is 100 years old when this happens, and Sarah is shocked and joyful. She says, “God has made me laugh,” because the blessing was so surprising and beautiful. Isaac grows, and when it’s time for him to stop nursing, Abraham throws a big celebration for him. ⭐ Problem in the Family — Ishmael and Isaac But everything at home isn’t peaceful. Abraham also has another son named Ishmael (ISH-may-el), born through Sarah’s servant Hagar (HAY-gar). One day, Sarah sees Ishmael teasing young Isaac.

She becomes upset and tells Abraham she doesn’t want Ishmael to share in Isaac’s future blessings. Abraham feels torn because Ishmael is his son too, and he loves him.
But God speaks to Abraham and tells him not to worry — He will take care of Ishmael and make him into a great nation as well. So Abraham gives Hagar and Ishmael food and water and sends them out with God’s promise of protection. ⭐ God Saves Hagar and Ishmael in the Desert Hagar and Ishmael walk in the desert until their water runs out.
Hagar becomes desperate and heartbroken because she doesn’t want to watch her son die.

She cries. Ishmael cries.

But God hears the boy. An angel tells Hagar not to fear because God has a plan for Ishmael’s life. Then God opens Hagar’s eyes and she sees a well of water.
She gives her son a drink and they survive.

The Bible says God was with Ishmael as he grew into a strong young man. ⭐ Abraham Makes Peace with King Abimelech At the end of the chapter, Abraham talks with King Abimelech (Uh-BIM-uh-lek) — the same king from the last chapter. They settle an argument about a well and make a peaceful agreement.
Abraham plants a tree and worships God, showing his faith and trust.
