God sees what’s building inside of him and gives a warning that still applies to all of us today: “Sin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must rule over it.” That line captures the essence of human struggle — temptation is always close, but it’s our choice whether to give in or stand firm. Tragically, Cain ignores God’s warning and kills his brother in the field, committing the first murder in history. When God confronts him, Cain tries to deny responsibility, famously asking, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” — a question that echoes through generations. God’s response is justice mixed with mercy. He curses Cain to wander the earth, yet protects him with a mark so that no one will kill him. Even in punishment, God’s grace is present.
