In the previous chapter, we saw that the earth had become corrupt and violent. Humanity had turned completely away from God, filling the world with wickedness. But Noah was different. Genesis 6 ended by telling us that Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. Because of his obedience and righteousness, God chose Noah to build an ark that would save his family and pairs of every kind of living creature from the coming flood. Chapter 7 begins with God giving Noah the command to enter the ark. God tells him, “You and your entire household go into the ark, for I have seen that you are righteous before Me in this generation.” This shows the deep trust God had in Noah’s faith and leadership. God also instructs Noah to take seven pairs of every clean animal and one pair of every unclean animal, along with birds and all other creatures that move on the ground.
