Linking the stories in Genesis together reveals a major purpose of God -- the development of distinct nations.  Satan's plan is to combine/eliminate the nations and rule over them. God will preserve the distinct nations even under the physical rulership of Jesus Christ.  Also, the recurring theme of Babel and "traditions of man" in opposition to distinct nations and the Word of God.
