Genocide in the Bible - WTF do we do with stories like these?

There is a story in the bible, it's a brutal story.  It's about one group genociding another group.  For years I’ve had it marked with a WTF in the margin.  What in the world do we do with stories like these?  Especially when they are in the Bible!?!?

This week, I'm going to propose an answer.  Or at least, I'm going to propose a way of looking at one particular story that I think redeems it in some small way.  Not because genocide is redeemable, but because the core motivation underneath this story is, I think, something we might be doing regularly in our lives.

And that is worth wrestling with.
