Many are led to believe that they are here to save the next generation from the experiences that they had at the hands of the previous generation. This has resulted in problematic philosophies like gentle parenting and other similar liberal approaches to being human, without understanding the long-term impact of their methods.
Our inclination to label our unpleasant experiences as traumatic, toxic, and abusive only adds to the problems encountered in trying to create that wholesome life that we all crave. Understanding the wisdom of the ones who came before us, or even those who raised us, while recognising potential shortcomings or limitations in their methods, is key to making informed decisions on how to build on what we inherited, rather than discarding and replacing without true understanding.
The easy part is knowing how we don’t want to be as parents or as humans compared to others. The difficult part is in figuring HOW to achieve who we want to be without causing destruction in our trial and error efforts along the way.
