George Carlin was born on May 12, 1937, in Manhattan, New York. Raised in a working-class Irish Catholic family, Carlin grew up in a neighborhood where street wisdom and sharp observation were everyday survival tools.
His father was an advertising manager who struggled with alcoholism, and Carlin’s mother eventually raised him alone. She encouraged his curiosity and education, but Carlin was never comfortable with authority or rigid systems.
That rebellious streak would later become one of the defining elements of his comedy.
Carlin attended several schools but was frequently disciplined for questioning rules and authority figures. By the time he reached his teenage years, he realized traditional education was not the path he wanted to follow.
At age seventeen, Carlin enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. While stationed in Louisiana, he worked as a radar technician but also discovered something far more exciting—radio broadcasting.
This experience sparked a lifelong love for words, language, and performance.
