Welcome to unit 11. In this unit we will learn some very useful adjectives and the word for "if". Don't forget to try to say the sentences out loud when your're learning. This will help you improve. Also, don't worry about mistakes! You've done very well to get this far and mistakes are part of the process.

I have to go.

Ich muss gehen.

I have to go to work.

Ich muss zur Arbeit gehen.

I have to go to work but I can’t.

Ich muss zur Arbeit gehen, aber ich kann nicht.

What is it? 

Was ist es? 

I know.

Ich weiß.

I know what it is.

Ich weiß, was es ist.

The way to say “easy” in German is:

Einfach.

Let’s repeat that: 

Einfach.

It’s easy.

Es ist einfach. 

It’s a little easy.

Es ist ein bisschen einfach.

It’s not easy. 

Es ist nicht einfach.

I think it’s easy. 

Ich denke, es ist einfach. 

I would like to learn it.

Ich möchte es lernen. 

I would like to learn it because it’s easy. 

Ich möchte es lernen, denn es ist einfach. 

I’m learning German. 

Ich lerne Deutsch. 

I’m learning German but it’s not easy. 

Ich lerne Deutsch, aber es ist nicht einfach. 

The way to say “difficult” in German is:

Schwierig.

Again:

Schwierig.

It’s difficult. 

Es ist schwierig. 

It’s difficult because…

Es ist schwierig, denn…

It’s a little difficult.

Es ist ein bisschen schwierig.

I have no time.

Ich habe keine Zeit.

It’s difficult because I have no time.

Es ist schwierig, denn ich habe keine Zeit. 

To say: “you have” we say:

Du hast.

Again:

Du hast.

Have you? 

Hast du? 

Do you have time?

Hast du Zeit?

Yes, I have a little time.

Ja, ich habe ein bisschen Zeit.

Do you have time? Yes, but I don’t know when.

Hast du Zeit? Ja, aber ich weiß nicht, wann.

German is easy.

Deutsch ist einfach. 

German is easy because I speak English.

Deutsch ist einfach, denn ich spreche Englisch.

I think I can learn it.

Ich denke, ich kann es lernen.

German is difficult but I think I can learn it.

Deutsch ist schwierig, aber ich denke, ich kann es lernen.

German is difficult but interesting.

Deutsch ist schwierig, aber interessant. 

The word for “possible” is:

Möglich.

Again:

Möglich.

It’s possible. 

Es ist möglich. 

I think it’s possible.

Ich denke, es ist möglich. 

It’s not possible. 

Es ist nicht möglich. 

The word for “if” is:

Wenn.

Let’s say that again:

Wenn.

If possible

Wenn möglich.

If I can.

Wenn ich kann.

If I have to.

Wenn ich muss.

I can do it if I have to.

Ich kann es machen, wenn ich muss.

If you kann

Wenn du kannst.

If you would like.

Wenn du möchtest.

I can do it if you would like.

Ich kann es machen, wenn du möchtest.

I would like to live in Berlin if possible.

Ich möchte in Berlin wohnen, wenn möglich.

I would like to speak German, if possible.

Ich möchte Deutsch sprechen, wenn möglich.

I have time.

Ich habe Zeit.

The way to say: “If I have time” is:

Wenn ich Zeit habe.

Let’s repeat:

Wenn ich Zeit habe.

The German word for “if” is special and changes the order of the words a little. Did you notice? It moved the verb to the end of the sentence. We didn’t see this in the previous examples because they were too short.

Let’s do another example.

I do it.

Ich mache es.

If I do it.

Wenn ich es mache.

Let’s try some more.

I learn German.

Ich lerne Deutsch. 

If I learn German.

Wenn ich Deutsch lerne.

I work in Germany.

Ich arbeite in Deutschland.

If I work in Germany.

Wenn ich in Deutschland arbeite.
